A House panel is debating legislation that would ban some assault-style rifles, typically used in mass shootings. They are also debating allowing lawsuits against gun manufacturers. The bills are likely to pass in the Democrat-controlled House, but would face stagnation in the Senate, where at least 10 Republicans would have to allow debate. The legislation is unpopular with Republicans who defend the Second Amendment of the US Constitution – the right to bear arms.
“Will our Republican colleagues choose to defend the weapons of choice for mass murderers?” Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler asked.
Representative Jim Jordan, senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, replied that the ban would make “millions of guns in the homes of law-abiding citizens” illegal.
