A 7-magnitude earthquake damaged buildings in the northern Philippines on Wednesday morning. It left five people dead and injured several. It was centered in a mountainous area of the Abra province, where victims were caught in falling debris and cement slabs from houses.
The quake was felt as far as Manila, 200 miles south, where patients and medical personnel were evacuated from hospitals, but were able to return after engineers inspected and found no threatening structural damage.
The quake was caused by movement in a local fault at a depth of 10 miles. The public was warned to expect aftershocks.
