The late Queen Elizabeth II is being called a peacemaker, as new revelations emerge showing that the monarch tried to get Meghan Markle to reconcile with her estranged father, Thomas Markle.
The book “The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown” is written by Kate Nicholl, a royal expert. She says that the Queen was unhappy about her grandson, Prince Harry, marrying Meghan Markle without ever meeting his soon-to-be father-in-law.
The late Queen was also uncomfortable with Meghan and her father’s estranged relationship.
According to Nicholl’s book, Queen Elizabeth was always supportive of anyone marrying into the royal family and did her best to get to know Meghan. She knew about the difficulties that Meghan faced with her extended family, and she was aware that some of her siblings and relatives were trying to take advantage of Meghan’s new status. The Queen was, however, more concerned that Harry had never met Thomas Markle and that the new duchess was not speaking to her father. Even though it was not in Queen Elizabeth’s nature to intervene in such affairs, she spoke to Meghan and Harry about it.
A close friend of the royal family spoke to Nicholl and said that the Queen felt that Meghan and Harry could have handled the situation better. She felt that Meghan should have sorted out her issues with her father, and it would have been appropriate if Harry had met Meghan’s dad before the wedding.
Meghan’s father did not attend his daughter’s royal wedding. A few days before her wedding in May 2018, Meghan announced on their Twitter account that her father would not be attending her wedding and that people should give him space to focus on his mental health.
In the book, Nicholl wrote that in the months leading up to her wedding, Meghan felt unsupported as many of her family members sold stories about her to the press, and her father suffered a heart attack, which forced him to pull out of the wedding ceremony.
Thomas Markle had admitted to photoshopping pictures of himself preparing for the wedding, trying on tuxedos, and his daughters sharing details about Meghan’s behavior over the years, hoping to undermine the Duchess’s reputation. One of his daughters admitted to making her father stage the photos so he could sell them to the media.
After the story of their deception and photoshopped pictures emerged, the family faced a lot of backlash, which led to her father’s heart attack and the cancellation of his attendance at his daughter’s wedding.
King Charles III assumed her father’s role and walked Meghan down the aisle.
Even though Queen Elizabeth’s efforts to mend the severely damaged relationship between Meghan and her father were unsuccessful, she died knowing she did everything she could to help Meghan and her father. She made sure that Meghan received all the support she needed, Nicholl wrote.
Barely two years after their wedding, Harry and Meghan decided to step down from their royal duties. They decided to protect their mental health and their children after Meghan continuously faced a lot of negative press. The Queen was not happy about the decision, but she respected it.
