Chicago law enforcement took four teenagers into custody, all facing charges for the tragic killing of a female police officer, who fell victim to a shooting while returning from her shift.

On Wednesday, May 10, the Chicago police department officially revealed the arrest of the four teenagers, charged with the first-degree murder of Aréanah Preston, a 24-year-old member of the Chicago police force.

Interim Superintendent Eric Carter said that Officer Preston, still in her police uniform, was on her way home Saturday when she was intercepted by four young males in a stolen vehicle. The car came to a halt and three of the teenagers jumped out, launching a lethal attack on Preston, who retaliated with gunfire. After Preston was shot and fell, the teenagers took her firearm, retreated to their car, and fled the scene.

An officer, coincidentally nearby due to an unrelated traffic incident, discovered Preston on the ground. Emergency services were summoned and transported her to a hospital, where her death was confirmed.

The detained suspects include 19-year olds Trevell Breeland and Joseph Brooks, 18-year-old Jakwon Buchanan, and a minor of 16 years, who will face charges as an adult due to the severity of the crime. The youngest among the accused reportedly boasted about the shooting incident in a phone conversation with an acquaintance.

Superintendent Carter reported that the four accused teens were believed to be involved in a series of additional alleged criminal activities in the hours preceding the fatal shooting. Additional charges include armed robbery, motor vehicle theft, burglary, arson, and violations related to weaponry.

On Tuesday, a commemorative vigil and balloon release were held by the Chicago Police Department in honor of their late officer. Preston was described by Carter as a cherished daughter, sister, and friend, who had aimed to effect positive change in the world. Her untimely demise was highlighted as a painful reminder of the city’s urgent need to enhance public safety measures.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot reaffirmed this sentiment in a statement issued on Saturday, vowing to prioritize the creation of a safer city environment free from rampant violence.

Data from a National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund report disclosed that last year, 64 officers lost their lives in shootings while on duty. The organization wrote that the rate of shootings involving police officers has escalated compared to a decade earlier, describing this as a deeply concerning trend.
