Three teenagers are in critical condition after a teen without a driver’s license collided with a school bus.
Police reported that on Wednesday, April 27, a 16-year-old unlicensed driver was driving a Honda Accord when he crashed into a school bus on Lake Road in New Castle, New York. The accident resulted in serious injuries to three teens in the car and a total of nine people injured.
Authorities stated that the driver, Erick Fuentes, lost control of the vehicle, veered into oncoming traffic, and collided with the school bus. Among those injured, the three teens in the Honda Accord, all students from Fox Lane High School, suffered the most severe injuries.
A GoFundMe campaign set up for Fuentes revealed that he sustained a fractured spine, a broken neck and leg, and had part of his skull removed due to a hematoma.
Jonathan Martinez, 17, one of the three critically injured teens, was initially declared dead at the scene but was resuscitated by paramedics. Martinez was put on a ventilator and had a fractured femur, a brain bleed, a ruptured spleen, and spinal injuries.
Axel Cantor, 16, the third severely injured teenager, underwent surgery lasting over five hours. Cantor also was placed on a ventilator and experienced a brain hemorrhage, collapsed lungs, liver bleeding, and two broken legs.
The families of the critically injured teenagers are currently grappling with financial challenges. They have received assistance from funds raised through three GoFundMe campaigns, which have already collected over $142,000.
Police confirmed that the five individuals on the bus sustained only minor injuries in the accident.
The cause of the driver’s loss of control remains unclear, and authorities have not revealed whether the driver possessed a learner’s permit.
