A random shooting spree in Arizona resulted in four fatalities and one injured individual.

Iren Byers, a 20-year-old man, is in police custody, charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Law enforcement arrested Byers on May 27, after security footage linked him to the shootings which occurred on Friday and Saturday. Byers admitted his involvement upon his arrest.

The shootings were spread across multiple locations. A man was killed in Phoenix on Friday, followed by three deaths and an injury in Mesa during late Friday and early Saturday. The injured woman, 36, was found stable but with serious gunshot wounds at the intersection of Main and Stewart Streets in Mesa.

Detective Brandi George, a police spokesperson, revealed that the woman will have surgery.

Multiple motivations are suspected for Byers’ violent actions, including potential mental health issues. In interviews, Byers expressed anger towards the injured woman and admitted to shooting her.

Byers confessed to murdering a man in Phoenix because the victim used fentanyl, a drug he detests due to personal reasons. He claimed to have shot the man, who was unarmed, in the head and then fled by bus.

In Mesa, the deceased victims, all aged 41, were found at various locations. Byers gave motives for each killing, from the victims’ associations with drugs to one being a stranger and homeless. He acknowledged that he did not seek help for any of his victims.

Police identified Byers using surveillance footage and matched shell casings at the crime scenes to a single handgun. Following his arrest, Byers was charged with trespassing on railroad tracks. He disclosed the location of the clothes he wore and the weapon he used during the shootings, which were found at his residence.

Byers remains in custody without bond.
