A 19-year-old driver’s casual remark about being too intoxicated to drive turned tragic as she lost control of her car, resulting in the death of her 17-year-old friend.
The accident, which happened in October 2021, was recently brought to public attention by Derbyshire, UK police through a video.
After attending a party where they played drinking games, Melissa Keilloh agreed to transport 17-year-old Phoebe Johnson and a relative back home. Upon being asked if she was fit to drive, Keilloh’s answer was, “I’m messed up.”
The journey turned tragic when Keilloh, driving at 72 mph on A514, struck a curb. The impact caused the car to deviate from its path and overturn, severely injuring Phoebe in the process.
Following the crash, Keilloh was heard exclaiming, “I’ve killed Phoebe.” Phoebe communicated her distress and Keilloh attempted to comfort her.
Phoebe’s parents gave permission for the release of the dashcam footage to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Both parents spoke about the unpredictability and fragility of life.
Witness accounts from the party indicated that the group’s initial choice was not to drive, but they reconsidered shortly after.
Keilloh faced legal consequences in January, receiving a three-year prison sentence and a driving ban of six and a half years.
The Derbyshire Police shared this case as a part of their campaign “Just a Second”, which advises against driving while impaired.
