Arnez Blount, better known as C-Knight from the influential G-funk group Dove Shack, has died. He passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023, after complications from a stroke that was linked to his long-standing battle with diabetes. He was 52 years old.
C-Knight, a native of Long Beach, California, rose to fame as part of Dove Shack, a group pivotal to the G-funk era in the mid-1990s. They made an indelible impact with their hit “Summertime in the LBC,” a song that has become a perennial favorite since its release. This track was a highlight of their 1995 debut album, “This Is the Shack.”
On October 18, 2023, Blount suffered a stroke during a dialysis session for his diabetes, a condition he had been managing for years. He subsequently experienced cardiac arrest and was put on life support. His care team closely monitored his brain activity before deciding to cease life support.
Dove Shack’s sound, a seamless blend of laid-back, funk-infused rhythms, was a hallmark of the West Coast hip-hop scene. Their debut album made an appearance on the Billboard 200 chart, showcasing their widespread appeal. The group’s collaboration with Warren G on the album “Regulate… G Funk Era” further cemented their status in hip-hop history.
Beyond Dove Shack, C-Knight pursued solo endeavors. His 2001 solo project, “Knight Time,” displayed his musical versatility and dedication to hip-hop.
C-Knight, along with fellow Dove Shack members Bo-Roc and 2Scoops, crafted a sound that defined their era and inspired future musicians. Their signature style of melodic hooks and rhythmic verses over smooth beats has influenced many.
C-Knight’s and Dove Shack’s legacy continues through their music, especially during summer when “Summertime in the LBC” enjoys renewed popularity.
Blount’s passing has prompted fans and fellow artists to revisit Dove Shack’s music, leading to a surge in streams of their songs as a tribute to the late rapper.
