Former President Barack Obama expressed his thoughts on President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election in 2024.
Obama, in a statement issued on July 21, 2024, lauded Biden, his former Vice President, for his accomplishments during his tenure and his exceptional character.
In his public statement, Obama referred to Biden as a “patriot of the highest order,” emphasizing his respect for Biden’s dedication and resilience. “I came to admire Joe’s character in the years we worked alongside one another,” Obama stated, alluding to their time in office together from 2009 to 2017. He further noted that Biden’s character was pivotal in “saving the country from ruin over the past few years.”
Obama acknowledged Biden’s accomplishments in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting job growth, and tackling climate change. “Joe’s economic, international, and climate change victories during his administration have set a high standard,” Obama declared. He also pointed out Biden’s success in enacting gun safety laws and reducing prescription drug prices, adding that Biden has “reminded Americans of the country’s core values and the importance of democracy, rule of law, and accountability.”
Obama underlined Biden’s role in defeating former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, terming it as Biden’s most significant achievement. “His leadership in keeping Trump out of office in 2020 cannot be overstated,” Obama remarked. He recognized that Biden’s decision not to run in 2024 must have been challenging, considering his resolve and dedication. “I’ve never known Joe to back down from a fight, so I know this decision was tough on him,” Obama said.
Obama also spoke about the future of the Democratic Party, expressing his faith that party leaders will manage the upcoming challenges and select a strong candidate for the 2024 election. “I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges,” he said. “We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead, but I believe we will emerge stronger and more united.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, the recipient of Biden’s endorsement, expressed her gratitude and commitment to continue the work they initiated. “I am honored by President Biden’s endorsement and committed to carrying forward the vision we share for a generous, prosperous, and united America,” Harris said in a statement.
With Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race, the political landscape has been noticeably affected, provoking responses from multiple directions. Former President Donald Trump referred to Biden as “the worst president, by far,” illustrating the divided nature of the present political environment.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi commended Biden’s decision, describing it as a “selfless act” in the best interest of the nation.
Reports have implied that Obama privately encouraged Biden to reconsider his re-election bid for the party’s benefit, although these conversations were not disclosed until after Biden’s announcement. This mirrors Obama’s past approach when he withheld his endorsement until Hillary Clinton secured the Democratic nomination in 2016.
The Democratic National Convention, where the party’s nominee will be officially chosen, is expected to be a significant event with Biden’s vision for America’s future at its center. Obama expressed his belief that Biden’s legacy and the principles he championed will continue to guide the party and the nation. “Joe’s example has reminded Americans of what we stand for,” Obama said. “His decision to step aside reflects his unwavering commitment to the greater good.”
On Thursday, July 25, Barack and Michelle Obama announced their support for VP Kamala Harris.
