On the evening of Thursday, June 27, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris had a heated discussion with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The conversation followed President Joe Biden’s debate performance, which led to increasing concerns within the Democratic Party.
The Atlanta, Georgia debate left several Democrats questioning Biden’s ability to spearhead the party in the 2024 presidential election due to his unsteady and strained delivery.
The interview began with Cooper noting the dissatisfaction within the Democratic Party following Biden’s debate. He implied that there were suggestions within the party for Biden to consider stepping down. Harris acknowledged Biden’s slow beginning but highlighted his strong finish and the significant policy differences he presented compared to former President Donald Trump.
“What we saw tonight is the president making a very clear contrast with Donald Trump on all of the issues that matter to the American people,” Harris claimed. Cooper, however, interjected, indicating the disappointment felt by many Biden supporters and the wider Democratic base, including some Democratic lawmakers who described the debate as a “disaster” and a “trainwreck.”
In defense of Biden, Harris emphasized the importance of substance over style in the debate, stating, “People can debate on style points, but ultimately, this election and who the president of the United States is has to be about substance.” She continued to criticize Trump, labeling him as dishonest and lambasting his positions on topics such as the January 6 event, election results, and abortion.
Despite Harris’s defense, Cooper continued to probe, questioning if the Biden on stage was the same man she saw daily. An evidently frustrated Harris replied, “I’m not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last three-and-a-half years of performance.” This exchange underscored the high tension and significant stakes of the impending election.
Biden’s debate performance led to significant worries among leading Democrats about his ability to galvanize the party and effectively counter Trump. David Axelrod, a veteran Democratic strategist, observed, “Biden seemed a little disoriented at the start,” though he conceded that Biden improved as the debate progressed.
A CNN flash poll conducted post-debate revealed that 67% of viewers thought Trump won, while only 33% believed that Biden prevailed. This poll further exacerbated the growing unease within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s viability as the nominee.
As the interview came to a close, Cooper asked Harris if she was troubled by Biden’s performance. She conceded, “It was a slow start; I’m not going to debate that. I’m talking about the choice in November. I’m talking about one of the most important elections in our collective lifetime.”
