Eduardo Xol, a beloved figure known for his work on the hit ABC show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” passed away following a stabbing incident in Palm Springs, California.

Xol, 58, was critically injured on September 10, 2024, and died from his injuries 10 days later on September 20. The Riverside County Coroner confirmed his death, which has now led to a murder charge against Richard Joseph Gonzales, 34, who was arrested shortly after the incident.

Xol, who appeared in over 65 episodes of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” from 2005 to 2012, gained national recognition as a landscape designer on the show. Beyond his television career, Xol also had a background in music and acting, having appeared in telenovelas such as “Acapulco,” “cuerpo y alma,” and “La jaula de oro.” His unique blend of creativity and compassion left a lasting impact on audiences and colleagues alike.

“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved Eduardo Xol. As his family, we know that his kindness has touched the lives of so many. We ask for that kindness returned now, allowing our privacy to be respected as we process our grief,” the Xol family shared in a statement to People.

On the morning of September 10, Palm Springs police received a 911 call from Xol, who was able to report that he had been stabbed but was unable to identify his attacker. Police arrived at his apartment on the 400 block of East Arenas Road and found Xol suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was immediately transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he remained in serious condition for several days.

Later that same day, Richard Joseph Gonzales, an acquaintance of Xol, contacted the police, claiming he had been assaulted the night before. Investigators quickly linked Gonzales to the stabbing and arrested him on charges of attempted murder. Following Xol’s death, those charges were upgraded to murder. Gonzales is currently being held without bail at the John Benoit Detention Center, and his trial is expected to begin later this year.

Richard Perez-Feria, the former editor-in-chief of People en Español, shared his deep sense of shock and sadness over Xol’s passing. He found it hard to say goodbye to someone who had played such an important role in his life. Perez-Feria described Xol as a cherished and passionate individual who meant a lot to him.

Xol’s family highlighted his lifelong dedication to service and helping others, pointing out that his contributions extended well beyond his television career. They acknowledged his involvement in charitable activities and his strong desire to support those in need. They also requested that, instead of sending flowers, donations be made to the Lupus Foundation of America in Xol’s name.

Xol’s television work brought joy to many viewers, and his efforts on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” significantly impacted the communities where homes were built and renovated. His colleagues fondly remembered him as someone whose dedication to his work was equally matched by his generosity and kindness.

As the investigation into Xol’s death continues, questions remain regarding the relationship between Xol and Gonzales. While police have confirmed that the two men were associates, the exact nature of their connection remains unclear. Authorities have not yet disclosed a potential motive for the attack.

Gonzales has yet to enter a plea, and whether he has retained legal representation is unclear. As of now, he remains in custody, awaiting trial on murder charges.
