Bayview 60 Homes, a five-story, 60-unit apartment building located at 3800 NE 168th Street in North Beach, Florida, was evacuated Monday, following a month’s long investigation by an engineering firm that determined the building was “structurally unsound” during its 50-year recertification process. The Chief Communications Officer forNorth Miami Beach, Susset Cabrera, told news reporters on Monday that the owner of the building asked the city to order an evacuation of residents immediately, based on the findings of the engineering report.
The Miami Herald reported that the engineering firm involved in the inspection, Bronislaus P. Taurinski Structural Engineers, said the building needed to be evacuated due to a deflection of the floor slabs in the building. According to the report, the deflection of the slabs exceeds the ACI’s (American Concrete Institute) guidelines.
Residents were given a 24-hour warning to pack up their belongings and evacuate the building. CBS Miami reported that city leaders will assist in relocating the 55 families who lived there.
City officials said that residents would be able to return to gather more belongings later in the week, and that rent and security deposits for April would be refunded.
Bayview 60 Homes is about three miles north of Champlain Towers South, the condo tower that partially collapsed last summer, killing 98 people. That disaster alarmed many local residents and prompted North Miami Beach officials to review all condo buildings above five stories in the area.
