LONGWOOD, Fla. — A Florida bride and her wedding caterer were arrested for allegedly lacing food with marijuana at a wedding, causing the guests to be sick and several were sent to the hospital.
The 42-year-old bride, Danya Svoboda (a/k/a Glenny), and 31-year-old Jocelyn Bryant, the owner of the catering company, were charged with culpable negligence and food tampering.
On February 19, Seminole county police responded to a call from a 41-year-old guest at the wedding, who said that he felt he had been drugged, in spite of having only consumed food and alcohol at a party. The deputies arrived at a community clubhouse where they saw multiple guests being treated by fire rescue personnel for symptoms consistent with marijuana intake.
When the bride and groom were asked if they had consented to or requested the food to contain THC, the groom, Andrew Svoboda, stared at the deputy with a bland expression before stuttering “no.” The bride, on the other hand, was seen in the footage smiling behind her husband. She shook her head no when police asked again if the couple authorized cannabis be added to the food.
Wedding guests who were treated for symptoms said they felt “stoned,” “high,” or”ill.” One guest who ate Caesar salad, bread with olive oil and herb dip, and tortellini said he felt tingly, his heart started to race and he was having crazy thoughts. He said he had used marijuana years ago and this experience felt different to him.
Another guest who ate three meatballs, salad and dip said he felt weird, fidgety, tingly, and had an extremely dry mouth.
Miranda Cady, a local realtor, says her friend at the table suspected that they were stoned. She said that everyone was looking around at each other laughing, after which she confirmed that they were high. “We were high as a kite, out of our minds,” she said. She also told investigators that she saw a caterer put spoonfuls of green mixture into the olive oil that accompanied the bread.
Cady, the realtor, confronted the bride on the dance floor, and the bride admitted to spiking the food. Cady said the bride acted like she was excited, as if she should be excited, as if she were given a gift.
One of the guests claimed to have seen the caterer reach into a punch bowl and remove a green substance. She also said that she could detect a strong odor of marijuana. She asked the caterer if there was marijuana in the food. The caterer simply giggled and shook her head yes. The guests asked if it was for real and the caterer repeated yes.
One of the guests who ate the laced food described that she had no control of her mind and body.
Caterers were seen wheeling out the food and supplies as Florida police entered the clubhouse where the party took place. The police halted their exit and they collected used glassware, utensils and food, including chocolate-covered strawberries, pudding “shots” and lasagna.
They also found that some food had been dumped on the lawn of a property that neighbored the clubhouse.
The samples of bread and lasagna found were tested and the results came back positive for THC, an active ingredient in cannabis.
Court records show that the caterer and bride both made bail and were released from Seminole County Jail.
