On Wednesday morning, students at the Pescadero High School in San Mateo County, California, 60 miles southwest of San Jose, had a big surprise at the school.
The English classroom was off limits. A baby mountain lion was discovered in the classroom in the early morning.
According to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department, the lion was found by a custodian. It had wandered into the classroom, and was hiding under a desk, seemingly frightened.
The school was placed on lockdown.
A community alert was sent out by the Sheriff’s Department at 9:18 AM to let citizens know that everyone at the school was safe and the lion was contained.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife was called and arrived at the school at around 9:30 AM. They were tasked with safely removing the baby lion without harming it.
They tried to “let it out on its own,” but the lion did not leave because it appears to be “lost and scared,” the Sheriff’s office spokesperson said.Superintendent Amy Wooliever said it wasn’t the first time that a mountain lion had been in the vicinity of a school in her district, but it was the first time that a lion had entered a school.
Students and staff were sent home early. High school finals had to be rescheduled.
The baby lion, a male around 4-6 months old, was removed safely and brought to the Oakland Zoo to be checked out.
At this time, it is unclear whether the baby will be reunited with his mother, or kept at the zoo.
