During Tuesday’s January 6 hearings, Cassidy Hutchinson, ex-White House aide to Mark Meadows (Chief of Staff) during the Trump administration, made news with explosive testimony about Trump’s activities on the day of the Capitol insurrection, January 6, 2021.
The US Secret Service may be refuting some of Hutchinson’s testimony.
“The United States Secret Service has been cooperating with the Select Committee since its inception in spring 2021, and will continue to do so, including by responding on the record to the Committee regarding the new allegations surfaced in today’s testimony,” Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement to CBS News.
Hutchinson testified that she had a conversation with White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Tony Ornato, in the presence of Robert Engel, the Secret Service agent who was in the president’s limo when he left the rally at the Ellipse on January 6. She said that Ornato related that Trump got upset when told that he could not join the demonstrators when they marched to the Capitol, and instead would be driven to the White House. According to Hutchinson, Ornato said that he had been told by Engel that Trump cursed at Engel, grabbed the steering wheel and lunged at him.
Questioned by Liz Cheney, the January 6 Committee vice-chair, Hutchinson said Engel did not dispute the account and was present when Ornato told it.
However, CBS News revealed that both Engel and the limo driver were willing to testify under oath that no one was assaulted by Trump and Hutchinson’s testimony may be incorrect.
They admit that Trump was upset and demanded to be driven to the Capitol.
The Secret Service has already given hours of testimony to the January 6 Committee. Ornato and Engel have both been interviewed in nonpublic sessions.
Donald Trump attacked Hutchinson during Tuesday’s hearing on his Truth Social platform, calling her a “phony”, a “leaker” and a “whacko”. He denied grabbing the steering wheel or attacking the agent.
It remains to be seen what the Secret Service representatives will say and what the January 6 Committee already has on record, and whether it will conflict with Hutchinson’s testimony.
