Over a year and a half has passed since the January 6 Capitol riot, and the man who was photographed with his feet on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk still hasn’t had his trial.
While in the Capitol, he left the Speaker a note and removed some of Pelosi’s mail.
The Arkansas man, Richard Barnett, 60, turned himself in to the FBI last year and was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, without bond, pending his initial court appearance.
Police were able to identify Barnett from photographs taken by news media and phone video footage while he was inside the building.
Barnett also gave a video interview to a New York Times reporter, in which he said, “I didn’t steal (an envelope)… I put a quarter on her desk, even though she ain’t (expletive) worth it.”
His trial, originally scheduled for September 6, 2022, has now been postponed until December 12, because Barnett’s attorney has been recovering from Lyme disease and COVID-19.
Barnet stormed the Capitol with other Trump supporters on January 6. He was carrying a stun gun, according to prosecutors.
He pleaded not guilty to the federal charges, which included entering and remaining on restricted property with a dangerous weapon, theft of government property and disorderly conduct.
If convicted, he faces up to a year in federal prison.
