July 15: A pilot in Missouri learned the hard way that flying drunk and landing on the highway isn’t a good idea, but he probably didn’t have much of a choice.
He was arrested after landing his single-engine aircraft on Interstate 70, near Kansas City, east of Grain Valley.
Apparently, the pilot was intoxicated, and had run out of fuel, according to reporting. He had radioed to let officials know his situation.
The pilot was the only occupant of the plane, and he hit a highway guardrail upon landing. Luckily, he didn’t hit anything or anyone else on the highway, according to a tweet by Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred July 15 in the middle of the night. The highway wasn’t as busy as usual. If the accident had occurred during the day, it could have been a disaster.
The pilot had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, after he was arrested.
KCTV local news reported that the highway’s westbound lanes were closed for several hours.
This wasn’t the first time the Missouri State Highway Patrol had to deal with an intoxicated pilot. In February, a pilot involved in a plane crash was booked for operating an aircraft while intoxicated. In that incident, the pilot and a passenger had minor injuries after landing in the woods. Police determined the pilot was drunk after he was able to get out of the plane.
On Wednesday, a pilot in Florida showed his skills in an emergency landing of a single-engine aircraft on a four-lane North Carolina highway, barely missing cars and power lines as he touched down.
