The New York City area was wild with the sounds of fireworks and gunshots over the Fourth of July weekend. More than 50 people were shot.
In the Bronx, a 62-year-old military veteran was shot in a drive-by shooting from a white Ford Taurus, where he was thought to have been an innocent bystander. In that incident, two young men, 23 and 26, were also found with gunshot wounds, and survived in stable condition. The car was found and an 18-year-old boy is being questioned.
In a bodega shooting in East New York, Brooklyn, two young men, 23 and 19 lost their lives. An 18-year-old boy was shot and hospitalized. In that incident, a suspect was caught. Surveillance video from the bodega recorded the gunfight. Police say it was probably gang related.
A July 4 barbecue in Queens was interrupted with four people shot – a woman and three men.
Bullets flew outside a Dior Boutique on Greene Street in the upscale neighborhood of Soho in Manhattan, wounding a 27-year-old man in a drive-by shooting, as he sat in his car at around 5 PM. The shooter fired from inside a white BMW with New Jersey license plates.
Another shooting occurred in the Bronx, where the victim, a 23-year-old man, survived.
Police say that this weekend, shootings went up more than 60%, compared to the same weekend last year.
There were 38 shootings and 52 victims over the holiday weekend, Friday through Monday.
In a statement, Mayor Eric Adams complained about the system. “We need help, I can’t say this enough, we need help. If we arrest them on Monday and they’re out on Tuesday, it’s endless,” the Mayor said Tuesday about the gun violence as he begged for bail reform action.
