Twitter went wild on Tuesday with images of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. seemingly pretending to be handcuffed as they were escorted away from the Supreme Court by police. The two accompanied Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. and several other House Democrats, at an abortion rights protest at the Supreme Court, blocking traffic, leading to Capitol Police escorting them away.
Video caught a smirking AOC being held by a police officer, with her hands behind her back, apparently pretending she was handcuffed, even though she wasn’t.
As proof that she wasn’t cuffed, she raised a fist to the crowd in solidarity.
Omar also was seen in a video walking away from the demonstration with her hands behind her back.
The videos and images went viral on Tuesday afternoon. Critics mocked the two “Squad” members for their dramatic performances.
Omar herself tweeted out the video of her handcuff pose, and wrote, “Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!”
