A kangaroo named Baxter escaped from its owners in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, due to the help of a parrot named Thor.
Thor had learned how to open a door.
Baxter lives with more than a dozen parrots owned by the nonprofit Bird Recovery International, which strives to help wild parrots return to the wild.
Thor seems to have had the same hopes for Baxter.
Baxter was seen hopping along the highways all day, before he was captured.
Officials with East Baton Rouge Animal Control told local WBRZ news on Friday that Baxter’s owners, who previously owned a zoo and now operate a non-profit, will have to give him up. It’s illegal to keep a kangaroo as a pet in Baton Rouge.
“Exotic animals, pets you can’t have any that are non native to United States. Any animal not native to the United States, anything venomous, you cannot have in East Baton Rouge Parish,” Daniel Piatkiewicz, Director of Animal Control & Rescue Center, said.
Baxter’s owners are trying to get a permit to keep him. The owners have a week to find Baxter a new home, or they can be fined.
Thor had no comment.
