#1: Boris Johnson:
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has agreed to resign, after two of his top ministers and others quit. Fifty officials resigned this past week.
Johnson made his decision after feedback from others in his party. His Treasury Chief, Nadhim Zahawi, told him in a letter, “Prime Minister: this is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly of all the country. You must do the right thing and go now.”
Johnson, 58, has had a controversial three years in office. The ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ was recent disclosures that he knew about sexual misconduct allegations against Conservative politician Chris Pincher, but he still gave Pincher a senior position. Pincher resigned last week as deputy chief whip after he allegedly groped two men at a private club.
#2: Elon Musk:
Elon Musk’s love life is in the news, again, and it seems like people care. Social media and internet articles show thousands of comments and shares.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and considered the richest man in the world, had twins with a woman executive at Neuralink, one of his companies.
Shivon Zilis gave birth to twins in April 2022 and court filings show that they are taking Musk’s name, according to CNN. The documents list Musk as the father and Zilis as the mother.
#3: Jayland Walker:
The mayor of Akron, Ohio lifted the curfew imposed on the city due to demonstrations, mostly peaceful, since the police shooting of Jayland Walker. Walker was shot and killed on June 27 with a barrage of more than 60 bullets, when he fled from officers that pulled him over in his vehicle.
Demonstrators have been gathering outside the city’s jail. A SWAT team was dispatched on Tuesday, where tear gas was used to disperse the group of about 75 demonstrators. Some were arrested.
#4: FBI and MI5:
The head of the FBI, Christopher Wray, and the director of MI5 in the UK, Ken McCallum, met in London on Wednesday. They warned about the growing threat of Chinese espionage. They talked about stolen technology, hidden Chinese investments, and other issues of concern to the two nations.
“The Chinese government poses an even more serious threat to Western businesses than even many sophisticated business people realize,” Wray said.
Wray warned business owners that they should work with the FBI and UK intelligence agencies to avoid cyberattacks and other spying efforts by China.
#5: Georgia Grand Jury:
After a Georgia grand jury subpoenaed Senator Lindsey Graham, Rudy Giuliani, and several other Trump lawyers this week, the Georgia district attorney said that more subpoenas will be issued to people in Trump’s inner circle.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating whether former President Trump and others attempted to unlawfully influence the 2020 presidential election in Georgia and other swing states.
When Senator Graham resisted, saying it was a fishing expedition and all about politics, Willis responded, “What do I have to gain from these politics? It’s someone who doesn’t understand the seriousness of what we’re doing. I hope he’ll come and testify truthfully before the grand jury.”
The subpoena to Senator Graham mentions two phone calls he had with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger following the 2020 election.
