The Right to Contraception Act was passed by the House of Representatives in a vote 228-195, along party lines, on Thursday. The act seeks to protect the rights of individuals to use contraception, a right that could be threatened by actions in the conservative Supreme Court.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kathy Manning, D-N.C., would  also give health care providers the right to prescribe contraceptives.

Democrats are concerned about comments made by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote that the Supreme Court should also revisit decisions like the 1965 case, Griswold v. Connecticut, which prohibits states from banning contraceptives. Thomas suggested the court should “correct the error” made in that decision.
