The woman rumored to be the girlfriend of Russian President Vladimir Putin has been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department.
Alina Kabaeva, 39, is a former Olympic gymnast. She is being sanctioned with other Russian elites for financially contributing to the Russian war on Ukraine.
It is rumored that Kabaeva has had at least three children with Putin.
Many claim that sanctioning Kabaeva and Putin’s children will do nothing to change Putin’s tactics or end the war in Ukraine.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen disagrees.
“As innocent people suffer from Russia’s illegal war of aggression, Putin’s allies have enriched themselves and funded opulent lifestyles,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.
She said the department “will use every tool at our disposal to make sure that Russian elites and the Kremlin’s enablers are held accountable for their complicity in a war that has cost countless lives.”
“Together with our allies, the United States will also continue to choke off revenue and equipment underpinning Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine,” she said.
Putin has not confirmed the relationship with Kabaeva, but she is widely linked to him romantically.
Kabaeva is a former member of the Duma, part of the Russian parliament. She currently is the head of a pro-Kremlin media group. She has already been sanctioned by the UK, Canada and the European Union.
Others close to Putin have also been hit with sanctions in the past few months, including two of his adult daughters, Mariya Putina and Katerina Tinkonova.
