The suicide of a man who killed a Chinese restaurant deliveryman in Queens, NY ended the final chapter to the tragic story that precipitated the deliveryman’s death.
Glenn Hirsch, 51, was found by police with a gunshot wound to his head Friday.
An argument last year over duck sauce precipitated the killing of a Chinese restaurant deliveryman, Zhiwen Yan, 45, in April.
Mr. Yan, who left China 20 years ago, was married and had three children. He was making a delivery on his scooter on a Saturday night in Forest Hills. He was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.
According to Kai Yang, owner of the Great Wall Chinese restaurant in Forest Hills, Queens, at the end of last year a customer, after requesting duck sauce with his order, helped himself to the entire bin of duck sauce packs on the counter.
Unsatisfied, the disgruntled customer demanded more, and then asked for his money back. The owner refused, and according to the owner, the police were called and arrived at the restaurant
“I give him more. He say, ‘No, I want my money back,’ ” Yang said. “I say, ‘Sorry, it’s COVID, I can’t take your order back after, and I give you more duck sauce.’ He calls police! They came. They ask me if I can refund his money. I say, ‘No, I can not.’ ”
After the incident, Mr. Yang started to experience a series of disturbing events. He reported his car tires were slashed, and on one occasion, the customer was allegedly caught in the act of damaging the owner’s car. Mr. Yang said the customer had a gun, and was wrestled to the ground by employees before the police came.
Another employee of the restaurant said that the irate, crazed customer would often wait on the sidewalk and harass the owner and the deliveryman.
Although Mr. Yang called the police several times after the incident, the customer was not charged with any crimes. It took several weeks for Hirsch to be arrested for the murder of the Mr. Yan, who was one of the employees who restrained the customer when he allegedly accosted the restaurant owner with a gun.
Hirsch was indicted on murder and stalking charges, among others. He faced up to life in prison. He pleaded not guilty and was planning to fight the charges in court.
Hirsch was out on $500,000 bail. He had been ordered by a judge to wear an ankle bracelet. When he did not show up for his court appearance Friday, the judge asked a city sheriff to go to his residence. That’s when he was found dead.
