A corpse was found burning and hanging from a tree in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, according to authorities in the city.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the body was found northeast of Griffith Observatory, near a merry-go-round and the Los Angeles Zoo on Tuesday afternoon. The sighting was discovered at about 12:30 pm by passers-by, who reported the flames to park rangers. The Los Angeles Fire Department put out the fire and the coroner eventually retrieved the human remains.
Investigators believe that the person died of self-immolation. “There are no indicators of foul play,” LAPD Detective Michael Ventura said. He added that there was nothing to suggest that someone has committed an act against their will, indicating that it was most likely a suicide.
The body belonged to a female, who has only been identified as Jane Doe 100. The person’s age and race have not yet been identified due to extensive burns. A coroner will conduct an investigation to find out the cause and manner of death, identify the victim, and notify the next-of-kin.
