A California dermatologist has been arrested after being caught on video set up in her kitchen, spiking her husband’s lemonade with Drano.
Sue ‘Emily’ Yu, 45, is shown in the footage, allegedly pouring the poison into her husband’s drinks.
Husband Jack Chen, a radiologist, gave police the evidence, and told police that he had had serious injuries due to his wife’s actions. Chen is seeking divorce after ten years of marriage, accusing Yu of abusing him and their two children for years.
Chen sought a restraining order against his wife, and presented a list of allegations against her, citing her abusive behavior. The restraining order was approved.
“When Emily gets frustrated and yells at the children, she’ll commonly use a Chinese phrase that translates to ‘go die’,” Chen wrote in a court statement. He stated that she would curse the children and insult them on multiple occasions.
Police arrested Yu on Thursday night outside her Providence Healthcare medical office in Mission Viejo, California, after Chen had called the Irvine Police Department earlier in the day and presented the video.
“Our officers reviewed the video,” Irvine, California Lt. Bill Bingham told reporters, before Yu was arrested on suspicion of poisoning her husband.
Bingham added: “The allegations that were made by the husband was incredibly serious and we thought it was important to take quick investigative action on the case based on the allegation.”
Chen says that his wife’s behavior became erratic and abusive after her children were born, in 2013 and 2014. He also alleges that Yu herself was abused as a child.
Chen recounted many episodes of verbal abuse toward his children, including spanking of his three-year-old when she wet her bed.
“When the kids fall asleep without permission, even if after 11:00 p.m. she would wake them up, demand that [they] go to her room, shut the door and make them cry,” he said.
“At the end sometimes she would tell the kids to get out and then slam the door behind them, making them cry outside her door.”
Police say that the poisoning occurred over a period of time, about a month, causing Chen’s symptoms of illness that he was unable to find a reason for, although he received medical attention.
Bingham said: “She [Yue Yu] was arrested under a section of California law that alleges she woefully placed a poison or harmful substance in food, drink, medicine or pharmaceutical product.”
Yu has been released on $30,000 bond.
