A 12-year-old Alabama boy made up a story about how his mother died, but later admitted that he accidentally shot her.

Shortly after 12 a.m., on Saturday, August 6, there was a 911 call for help at a home in the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue, in Forestdale, Alabama.  Ayobiyi Cook, 29, was found dead by police.

Her 12-year-old son, identity not revealed, initially gave a concocted account that Jefferson County deputies found unbelievable. Eventually the truth came out. He didn’t mean to shoot her but the gun went off accidentally.

Officers were originally told “a man was seen fleeing from the residence shortly before the 911 call was made,” the department said in its initial release, published Saturday.

However, the Jefferson County deputies said, “There appeared to be no forced entry into the home.”The offense will be handled in the Family Court system and the child will stay with family. 

Cook was the wife of a Birmingham police officer, who apparently was at work when his wife was shot.
