A NYC neurologist who was convicted last month for sex crimes against his own female patients, presumably committed suicide, early Monday at around 4:30 a.m., in a Riker’s Island jail shower room.
Dr. Ricardo Cruciani, 67, who treated patients with chronic pain, was found sitting in the shower with a sheet around his neck.
He had been found guilty on July 29 of raping at least six women, after intimidating them with threats that he would stop dispensing addictive painkillers to them.
In his trial, prosecutors said he got women addicted to painkillers, and then demanded “favors” from them.
One woman said he, “didn’t finish writing my prescriptions until I did something for him.”
He was found guilty of 12 counts, including rape and other sex crimes.
Medical personnel came to the scene at the prison, but he was pronounced dead an hour after they arrived.
After his trial and lock-up, his troubles weren’t over. The doctor still faced federal charges regarding his 15 year abuse of patients in multiple medical offices, including NYC, Philadelphia, PA and Hopewell, NJ.
Cruciani’s lawyer had requested he be put on suicide watch, minutes after he was convicted. According to the lawyer, he was supposed to be checked on every 30 minutes. That doesn’t seem to have been the case. He was said to have entered the shower at around 4:30 a.m., but wasn’t found until about an hour later.
The imprisoned neurologist was the 12th person to die this year in custody or shortly after release from prison.
