Paul Pelosi, 82, the husband of US House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) misdemeanor charge, which was reached in a plea agreement.
He was involved in a crash of his 2021 Porsche in May 2022 in Napa Valley, California, in which the driver of the other car was injured. After the crash, a DUI test found a blood alcohol content of .082%, a little over the legal limit.
The two vehicles suffered major damage and officers who arrived at the scene said Pelosi was uninjured and found in the driver’s seat of his car, near the intersection of California Route 29 and Oakville Cross Road.
The 48-year-old driver of the SUV involved in the accident complained of pain in his arm, right shoulder and neck, and headaches following the crash. Because of the other driver’s injuries, the charge against Pelosi was determined to be a misdemeanor.
California Highway Patrol officers reported at the time that Pelosi was “unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.”
Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail and three years probation. He has already served two of the jail days and received credit for two other days for good conduct. He will be required to work eight hours in a court program to complete the obligation of the final day, instead of confinement.
The sentence was given by Napa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Solga. Paul Pelosi did not appear in court, but was represented by his attorney.
During his probation, Pelosi will attend a three-month class designed to help and educate drinking drivers. He will also be required to have a device on his car that takes a breath sample before the car can start. He was order to pay about $7,000 in fines.
Paul Pelosi has been married to Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, since 1963.
