Three victims were killed in a horrifying hit-and-run incident in Chicago last Sunday.
27-year-old Devonta Vivetter, 25-year-old Donald Huey, and 23-year-old Jaylen Ausley were pronounced dead by the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Another person was injured during the incident and is currently still hospitalized.
According to reports, what started as an argument in Jeffrey Pub, a black-owned gay bar, the oldest in Chicago’s Southside, led to an altercation on the street. At around 5 a.m., someone allegedly left the bar, entered a car, and crashed it into the victims. The car was recovered four blocks away from the bar, but the suspected driver was not found at the scene. The dash-cam footage, which has been circulating on the internet, showed that the horrific incident seemed to be intentional. Various angles of the hit-and-run incident have been posted.
Ausley’s relatives were distraught and said that Ausley’s goal was to attend an Ivy League graduate school and work with community youth to solve violence issues. Previously, he worked at the Gary Comer Youth Center, an organization that empowers youth through various forms of youth assistance and support. They are demanding justice for Ausley’s death.
Jewel Perrian, Huey’s grandmother, shared that, “To harm those kids like this, I’m still in shock, it’s still fresh. I’m still trying to wrap my head around what kind of monster could do that – and on purpose,” and that “this is blatant evil.”
Chicago Police Department Chief of Detectives, Brenden Deenihan, said that the officials are not treating the incident as a hate crime yet since there is no evidence indicating a hate crime.
The Jeffrey Pub shared their sympathy with the families of the victims.
Investigators are currently looking for the driver. “You can’t charge a car with a crime,” Deenihan shared.
They are asking for help in the hope of bringing “some solace to some of these families.”
