A tragic and seemingly random murder occurred in a parking garage near the campus of the University of West Georgia (UWG) on Saturday morning.
An 18-year-old female UWG freshman, Anna Jones, was shot as she sat in her parked car.
A former professor of UWG is being charged with the crime. Richard Sigman, 47, has been arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm, according to the Carrollton Police Department.
Previous to the incident, Sigman got into an argument with a man at an Italian restaurant in Carrollton. Sigman allegedly threatened to shoot the man, was seen with a weapon, and was told by security to leave the restaurant. He exited into the parking garage.
In the garage, Sigman opened gunfire at the parked vehicle were Jones was sitting. She was killed by shooting.
The case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Carrollton Police Department.
The president of the UWG issued a statement Saturday. “The University of West Georgia has learned of the loss of one of its students, Anna Jones, who passed away following an off-campus incident earlier today,” President Dr. Brendan Kelly said.
“UWG has terminated the employment of Richard Sigman and continues to work with the city of Carrollton Police Department, which leads this ongoing investigation. On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends,” Kelly said.
