A man who used to be engaged to Michael Jackson’s sister LaToya, was said to have allegedly stolen personal items from the late singer’s home, soon after he died in 2009.
The Michael Jackson estate filed an injunction to stop the man from profiting off the stolen items, and won in court.
Jeffre Phillips, former fiancé of LaToya Jackson, was accused of stealing the pop singer’s phone, pills, some clothes, and even his “deathbed” pajamas.
Estate lawyers said they found out about Phillips’ actions from an auctioneer when Phillips tried to sell the items.
It is said that Phillips still has items that have not been returned to the estate.
The preliminary injunction prohibits the man from selling any of the stuff he took from Michael Jackson’s home in 2009.
The lawyers for the estate say that in the chaos caused by Michael’s death, Phillips took advantage and gathered items for his own profit motives, while he was staying at the home for nine days.
Reportedly, he stole Jackson’s driver’s license, notes written by the star, and other items that could have brought in a pretty penny if sold to collectors of Michael Jackson memorabilia.
‘In extremely appalling and inhumane act, Phillips even stole the pajamas Jackson was wearing in the final hours of his life,’ the lawyers said in the filing.
Phillips supposedly told the auctioneer that the items were taken right after Jackson died. That might have made the sale even more appealing.
But the auctioneer contacted the estate lawyers to verify the authenticity of the items.
Phillips had originally denied the allegations. He dated LaToya from 1995 to 2015.
Imagine how much money he could have made on a pair of sunglasses with smudges of Michael’s makeup, if he hadn’t been caught.
