Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96 when she died early in September, left behind a fortune of around $447 million. Her estate will be distributed among her family members.
In addition to this, an array of clothing and jewelry were also left behind. Now everyone is asking – who will inherit this collection?
The royal family started the collection in the 1800s, when Queen Victoria headed the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II inherited several pieces from the collection from her grandmother, Queen Mary.
A few of the pieces were previously loaned during her reign. Examples are the 100-diamond Cartier Halo worn by Kate Middleton and the Diamond Bandeau worn by Meghan Markle. The two women wore the pieces during their weddings.
Some of the most historical pieces owned by the Queen will be displayed in the Crown Jewels collection at the Tower or London.
The Queen has left a will which she has chosen to keep private. Royal experts say that most of the items from her private collection will probably go to Kate Middleton and Queen Consort Camilla. These are composed of gifts, pieces passed down to Elizabeth, as well as items that she personally bought.
Kate Middleton, the newly declared Princess of Wales and future queen, is said to receive most of the Queen’s pieces, but Camilla will probably get to pick first.
The Queen’s granddaughters will also inherit some of her belongings.
It is important to note that opting to keep items from the Queen’s collection is subject to a 40% inheritance tax. Everyone is required to pay, except for King Charles III. The King is exempt from the inheritance tax.
The deceased Queen’s estate also contains a massive number of artworks – an estimated one million objects – some of which are as old as the reign of Henry VIII.
