The NYC civil trial for Kevin Spacey has begun. There was chaos outside the courtroom as the disgraced Oscar-winning actor arrived and was bombarded by news crews.
Anthony Rapp, who accused fellow actor Kevin Spacey of sexually abusing him when he was just 14-years-old, testified in front of the New York jury that he felt helpless when the House of Cards actor climbed on top of him on a bed.
He told the jury that he froze when Spacey pinned him underneath his body, and he did not know what to do. At the time of the alleged sexual abuse, Spacey was 26-years-old.
Rapp told the court that the incident happened in 1986 at Spacey’s apartment on the Upper East Side, when both were starring in Broadway shows in New York City. He played in the Broadway show “Precious Sons,” while Kevin was starring in “Long Day’s Journey Into the Night.”
Rapp said that Spacey invited him to a party at his house, and when Rapp went into a bedroom in Spacey’s house to watch TV, Spacey, who was drunk, waited until the other guests left and went into the bedroom.
Rapp said that Spacey lifted and placed him on the bed, then proceeded to lay on top of him, pressing against him. Rapp found a way to wiggle out of the tight spot, but just before he fled the apartment, Spacey asked if he was sure he wanted to leave.
During cross-examination by his lawyer, Rapp said that at the time of the incident, he was just a frightened kid trying to get away from the sexual advances of a grown man.
Anthony Rapp, now 50-years-old, was the first to accuse Kevin Spacey of sexual abuse publicly. Several people also came forward with the same allegations of unwanted sexual advances, essentially killing Spacey’s career, which was thriving at the time.
When the accusations started in 2017, the Academy Award winner was the star of Netflix’s critically acclaimed show “House of Cards.”
Andrew Holtzman, another witness in the case, claimed that Kevin also sexually assaulted him in 1981. Holtzman said that the incident happened at the offices of the New York Shakespeare Festival. He testified that he was working at the office when Spacey came in and sat at another empty desk in the office.
Holtzman was on the phone, and as he was wrapping up the telephone call, Spacey walked over to Holtzman, lifted him, and put him on the desk.
Startled by Spacey’s behavior, Holtzman said, “What are you doing? Get off of me!” Spacey let him go a few minutes later, took his belongings, and left the office.
Holtzman told the jury that he experienced some post-traumatic stress from the incident and started to blame himself, adding that the memory was still imprinted in his mind.
Anthony Rapp has starred in numerous Broadway shows, movies, and television shows, including Star Trek: Discovery, Rent, and If/Then. He is seeking $40 million from Spacey to compensate for the psychological damage he suffered after the ordeal.
Kevin Spacey denies the allegations.
