Elon Musk is back in talks with Twitter to buy the social media platform, raising people’s hopes that Former President Trump will be allowed back on the platform.
Donald Trump uses a new social media platform created by Trump’s media and technology company in February 2021. He insists that he will continue using his own social platform even if he is allowed back to Twitter.
Some of Trump’s allies and experts think that the allure of Twitter’s massive audience and the possibility that he would get a huge following would be too great of an opportunity to resist.
Jenna Ellis, Trump’s former legal advisor, put out a tweet on Sunday that showed a video of the former president’s return to Twitter and captioned it, “It’s Coming…”
Trump was kicked off Twitter in 2021 after he sent out tweets that were seen as incitement of violence after the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. His explosive tweets around the violent attack stemmed from his refusal to concede defeat in the 2020 presidential election. YouTube and Facebook also banned Trump from their platforms.
Before his ban, Twitter was his preferred social media platform and he posted multiple daily tweets. The ban deprived Trump of his favorite social media megaphone, and he has since had to contend with sharing his thoughts and posting his press releases on his own site, which is not as popular. In addition to social media, Trump has appeared in several interviews, mostly accepting interview invitations from friendly conservative hosts.
Elon Musk has been trying to buy Twitter for several years, but the negotiations have hit several obstacles. On Tuesday, Musk announced that he planned to honor the terms of the April deal with Twitter and buy the platform, if Twitter is willing to go back to the April deal.
According to Musk, Twitter made a mistake in banning Trump from the site as it alienated a huge part of the United States, and the decision did very little to block Trump from having a voice.
The sale of the platform to Musk is not final. In July, Twitter filed a suit against Musk, attempting to force him to buy the social platform per the original terms, after the tech billionaire tried to back out. Twitter has not released a statement accepting Musk’s offer, and the lawsuit is still pending.
Musk’s announcement has, however, sparked debate among Trump’s followers and Democrats about Trump’s future on the platform, as Musk might allow the former president back on Twitter.
Trump has a decent following on his own site, with almost four million followers reading his conspiracy theory posts and his continued allegation that the 2020 election was rigged.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he would not go back on Twitter even if Musk lifted the ban. He added that his departure from Twitter has made the platform boring and unexciting.
Despite Trump’s firm stand on Twitter, numerous experts think that Twitter’s massive reach and its legitimacy with the media would be hard for Trump to pass up.
