Some people find shells while walking on the shoreline. Some find hand grenades.
Law enforcement in Oregon issued a warning to the public following at least three hand grenades washing ashore at Newport beaches.
In a statement, the Newport Police Department said they responded to multiple reports of the devices washing up on the shore between Yaquina Bay State Park and Agate beach. Police were dispatched to investigate on October 4.
The devices appeared to be white canisters with an “explosive” warning. They were also labeled “simulator, hand grenade, M116A1.” The photo released by the police showed that the grenades came with instructions. According to the news release, the three hand grenades were seized by the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad.
These devices are known to be commonly used in military training exercises, to simulate explosions.
Authorities are yet to release more information about the devices found, where they might have originated and how they appeared on the shore.
Newport police issued a warning for the public not to handle or attempt to move the devices, if they encounter one. The public is advised to call the police regarding the device’s location.
The find was puzzling to all involved and police are trying to figure out where the devices came from. Was it a Halloween prank a little early? Or did someone dispose of their collection of explosive hand grenades?
