American comedian Jay Leno was discharged from the hospital Monday, November 21, after having been admitted for suffering severe burn injuries during a garage car fire on November 12.
The 72-year-old former Tonight Show host was released from the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, according to a statement released by the hospital, along with photos of the comedian smiling alongside several of the facility’s employees.
The statement released by the hospital said Leno had been admitted to the center for ten days and would continue to receive follow-up care for burns on his face, hands, and chest at the hospital’s outpatient clinic. They said that the comedian was grateful to all his caregivers and all the well wishes he got from his fans, and that he was looking forward to spending the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday at home with family and friends.
Dr. Peter Grossman, who was treating Leno, said he was pleased with how the burns were healing, and he was optimistic that Leno would recover fully.
Leno underwent two surgical procedures before his release. He received surgical excision and grafting procedures, which involved surgeons removing unhealthy tissue to help the wound heal properly and reduce the potential for infection.
Leno gave a statement two days after the fire incident, which left him with severe second and third-degree burns on his hands, face, and chest. In his statement, he confirmed that he had sustained severe injuries from a gasoline fire and would need two to three weeks to recover.
A Burbank Fire Department press release shows that the fire happened at around 12:30 pm on Saturday, November 12. Officers from the fire department arrived at the scene, assessed Leno’s condition, and treated him before transporting him to a local hospital. The avid car collector had been working on a blocked fuel line when the explosion occurred.
Dr. Peter Grossman gave a statement last week after performing surgical excision and grafting on Leno, saying that the patient was in a good condition. He said that even though his face had sustained deeper and more concerning burns, he had not found any evidence of nerve damage.
Dr. Grossman said that he expected Leno to make a complete recovery, but it was still unclear if he would remain with scars from the burns.
Leno, who hosted the Tonight Show for several years, is one of the best-known TV personalities in the US. The car enthusiast left the show to start his car show, Jay Leno’s Garage, and has a huge car collection.
