Uber banned a woman from its ride-share app on Wednesday. She was caught on video hurling insults and racist slurs at her Uber driver in a Washington DC neighborhood, prompting social media users to brand her a “Karen.”
The video, taken from a nearby building, included a cringe-worthy encounter full of expletive words and went viral on social media, leading to Uber banning the woman from their app on the same day.
Although the identities of the woman and the driver are still unknown, Washington DC police said they are looking into the incident, in which the customer repeatedly called the Uber driver racist insults.
Uber released a statement on Wednesday saying they had been in touch with the driver. They also confirmed that the behavior is not tolerated and they had banned the woman’s Uber account.
The Washingtonian Problems, a Twitter account that posts news of what’s happening in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, shared the video the bystander took, which quickly gained engagement with over two million views in just a few hours.
The video shows an SUV parked on the street with the passenger side rear door wide open. A woman and a man are heard arguing. The woman takes a noticeably condescending tone while arguing with the driver.
Although it is not immediately clear what started the argument, the conversation suggests that it stemmed from a request by the woman to use the man’s phone charger.
At some point during the argument, the woman told the black driver that she was his boss and called him a “little piece of s**t.”
The video begins with the white woman complaining about not being given a phone charger. She shouts that the driver had not plugged his phone in after the driver denied her request to use his charger, probably because he was using it to charge his phone.
The woman walks towards the driver as he tries to back away from her. While attempting to get away, he tells the woman to get out of his face. However, the woman defiantly advances toward him while shouting just inches away from his face.
Although the driver was visibly irate, he stayed silent as she insulted him. He kept his hands outstretched, gesturing to the woman that she was in his personal space.
Just before she started her racist tirade, she told the man that she was his boss. She then started to walk away, calling him names.
Fed up with the woman’s racist rants, the driver responded by insulting her, something that did not go well with her. In turn, she responded back calling the driver a slave.
The argument continued, and the woman made several derogatory statements, saying she had only asked him for a phone charger. She continued berating the driver, complaining that her battery charge was low.
Despite the driver’s attempt to avoid a physical altercation, the woman shoves him at the end of the video.
Uber said the driver reported the incident, and they are investigating it.
The Metropolitan Police Department said they could not open an investigation without an official complaint.
“The behavior seen in the video is sickening and has no place on the Uber platform or anywhere in society,” an Uber spokesperson told the media in a statement.
