In less than two weeks, Hawaii has reported a second shark attack. However, this time, the victim was able to get away.

A 68-year-old man fought off a 12-foot-long tiger shark with his diving knife after the shark bit a chunk off his buttocks.

Authorities did not identify the Hawaii man, but he was going for his daily morning swim at Anaehoomalu Bay at around 8:15 am last Tuesday when a shark suddenly came up to him and bit him.

According to eyewitnesses, the man from Waikoloa, Hawaii, was about 400 yards from the beach when the shark attacked him.

Hawaii Police Department issued a statement saying that the shark bit the man on the lower left torso as he attempted to fend it off with his diving knife, and that’s when it released him.

An unidentified woman and a man quickly jumped on paddleboards and came to his rescue. Personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department transported him to Queen’s North Hospital. The statement also said that he was in stable condition and they would transport him to Oahu to get treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Land and Natural Resources Department in Hawaii confirmed that the man was attacked by a tiger shark.

Increased reports of shark attacks in Hawaii have become quite concerning to tourists and locals.

On Friday, December 9, a couple was attacked by a shark on the island of Maui in Hawaii. Police received a call from a man telling them he and his wife had encountered a shark while snorkeling.

He told them he could not find his wife even after going back to shore to search for her.

He said that he and his wife had fought off the shark before turning around and trying to swim to safety. While the husband made it to shore, his wife did not. Later that day, search and rescue operators found part of a woman’s bathing suit and snorkeling set.

Fire Department and Ocean Safety officers in Maui started searching for the woman in the ocean using an aerial search. The Land and Natural Resources Department said that despite an extensive search of the surrounding area, they could not find the woman.

The department posted a picture on its Twitter account showing a sign at Anaehoomalu Bay that warned beachgoers that a shark had been seen around that area, after the shark encounter between the tiger shark and the man in his late sixties. The department also said they had put up additional warning signs at various resorts in the surrounding area and by ocean sports operators.

Reports from the Division of Aquatic Resources indicate that the risk of a shark attack increases exponentially during winter, despite fewer people swimming at that time.

The US leads the world in shark attacks, with 47 reported shark bites in 2021 and Florida reporting the most cases.
