Andrew Nguyen Doan, a former student at the University of California Irvine campus, threw his mother off a building on the campus and then jumped from the building, killing himself in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide.
The two bodies were found outside 214 Pereira Drive at around 4 pm on Tuesday, police confirmed.
Investigators confirmed that Doan, 36, had picked up his elderly mother, Thao Nguyen, 77, and tossed her off a multistory building at the School of Social Sciences before leaping to his death.
Although the motive behind the murder-suicide is unknown, police said that on a number of occasions they had interacted with Doan, with the last incident in 2019 being related to a mental health issue.
Speaking to news media, the school’s spokesperson, Tom Vasich, indicated that at the time of his studies between 2017 and June 2019, Doan was pursuing a major in biological sciences, but he did not graduate and no longer had a relationship or affiliation with the school.
While at a psychiatric hospital sometime in 2019, Doan sexually battered his roommate and was arrested. He was released from custody after his mother posted a bail of $100,000. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 156 days in jail and three years probation, which ended last July, according to Orange County Superior Court records.
Nguyen and Doan both lived in Irvine. “He was a troublesome young man,” recalled one of their long-time neighbors, Michael Bertin. “It’s like he had demons. It’s a horrible thing,” he said.
The neighbor said Nguyen was a quiet woman that he would see gardening. He had never seen the woman and her son arguing, from what he could recall.
