A man from Cleveland who allegedly stole a woman’s car, drove it into the fence of the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and crashed into the control tower on November 23. He told authorities he thought the whole incident was funny.
Officers from the Brook Park Police Department arrested Benjamin Woolley, 26, while he was walking on the Aerospace Parkway. He told the officers that he wanted to board a plane to Athens, Alabama, to see his two children, a son, and a daughter. Woolley said he would do whatever it took to get to his children.
During his arrest, police noted that Woolley’s hands were bloody, and he said it was because he was being “stupid and rowdy.” He also told the police that he was looking for attention.
At first, Woolley did not seem to understand why he was being arrested, but one of the officers told him it was because he stole a car and proceeded to crash it through the airport gates. The 26-year-old told the arresting officers that he had been a sheriff’s deputy at one point.
An FBI affidavit shows that the police arrested the man on several charges, including destroying an airport facility, carjacking, and entering restricted territory in an airport. The affidavit also states that Woolley’s car crash on November 23, one of the airport’s busiest days, right before Thanksgiving, incapacitated power to the air control tower, grounding numerous flights. The document also said he later laughed off the incident, saying it was a joke.
The FBI claims that earlier that evening, Woolley went into the parking lot of an apartment building and stole a Volkswagen Tiguan, which the owner had left running. The owner of the car said in the affidavit that she saw a male walking toward her car and then he quickly jumped into the vehicle and started driving off.
She then jumped against the window on the front passenger side as she attempted to stop the man from stealing her car. Woolley then accelerated the car, and she got thrown off of the vehicle, landing on the pavement.
Fairview Park Police got a call about a stolen car at around 8:15 pm local time. The owner told the police she had left her vehicle on and running as she was looking for her lost pet. She also said that she had been dragged for around 150 feet while attempting to stop the theft.
After Woolley succeeded in the car theft, he drove to the airport, crashed through a gate, and straight into the airport’s air control tower.
At least seven Cleveland-bound flights got diverted to other destinations as the power to the control tower shut down. The FBI also said several flights got grounded as management seized airport operations for about 30 minutes until the airport activated its backup generator.
Airport police found the vehicle damaged and discovered it had also gone through another fence. Authorities claim that Woolley made fun of the incident during his arrest, which was caught on body cameras.
They said after the police read him his Miranda rights, Woolley said he was an overseas veteran, wanted to speak for people who don’t have a voice in society, and then started laughing to himself. One police officer asked him if he thought the incident was funny, to which he replied that some people would find it funny.
