Michelle Obama shared her feelings and resentments regarding her marriage with the former US president, Barack Obama, in a Revolt TV roundtable interview.
According to Michelle, she was doing most of the “heavy lifting,” while Barack was busy with his political career and was often absent. At that time, the couple also had to take care of their two little daughters, Sasha and Malia. Michelle says it was mostly her responsibility to take care of the kids.
“And for 10 years, while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even,’” she said.
The girls were ten and seven years old when Obama was elected President. Both lived in the White House during Obama’s presidency. According to Michelle, the kids cried a lot.
Michelle said she realized that working towards a successful marriage is not always a mutual undertaking. There are times when one half of the pair struggles more. This is where some people just choose to give up.
Despite what they went through, she shared that she “would take 10 bad years over 30 – it’s just how you look at it.” She said that she also respected and admired her husband, despite everything that they went through.
The two met in 1989 and had their wedding three years later in 1992. They have just celebrated 30 years of marriage. Their daughters are now 24 and 21 and share a house located in Los Angeles.
Michelle is promoting her new book, “The Light We Carry.” It was published in November 2022. For their memoirs, the pair also signed a joint deal in 2017 which is worth about $65 million.
