A shocking video shows a freight train derailing in Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon, after crashing through a semi-truck at a railroad crossing.
The video footage shows the tractor-trailer carrying a concrete bridge beam on the railroad crossing.
After the collision with the tractor-trailer, the cargo train flew off the railway tracks. The Collegedale Police Department shared updates about the accident on Facebook, announcing that nearby roads had been closed due to the accident and advised residents to find alternative routes.
Videos of the aftermath show several train cars lying on their sides in a wooded area near the tracks of the railway road. Amy Maxwell, the spokesperson for the Hamilton County EMS, told reporters that the truck was headed to a new construction site in Apison Pike and was carrying a 60-foot concrete barrier, but it couldn’t clear the tracks.
It was reported that the truck driver was not hurt.
Maxwell said that the Norfolk Southern train hit the truck, and ten boxcars and three of its locomotives derailed.
According to a Chattanooga-based news outlet, the crash left four of the train’s locomotives on their side. The outlet also reported that emergency personnel had rushed two people involved in the crash to nearby hospitals.
Even though authorities established that the train was leaking a huge amount of diesel fuel, it was not a hazardous threat to the residents.
Several residents who witnessed the dramatic crash pulled out their phones and recorded it on their cameras. They posted the footage on social media, and videos of the incident quickly went viral on Twitter, garnering tens of thousands of views in just a few hours.
The Fire Department of Chattanooga announced on Twitter that they were at the crash site along with several other agencies. They were trying to stop the diesel leaking from two locomotives but determined that no other hazardous material was leaking from the train.
The department also tweeted photographs from the accident scene showing the extent of the destruction the crash caused.
Train crashes are not a new occurrence in the US, and although they are not usual, they do happen occasionally and, at times, cause deaths or severe injuries.
In September, a train crashed into a police car near Platteville, Colorado, leaving one woman with severe brain injuries. The woman was in the back of a police car that an officer had parked on railroad tracks. An approaching train struck the vehicle and seriously injured the woman.
Two months before, in June, a train collided with a dump truck in Missouri heading to Los Angeles from Chicago. The train flipped over, and three people died in the crash. Over 200 passengers were aboard the train.
