In a ruse to assist people trying to get into Spain illegally, a woman pretended to be giving birth on a Pegasus Airlines flight from Morocco to Turkey.
The plane was forced to land in Barcelona, Spain on Wednesday morning, December 7, after the woman pretended to go into labor.
Twenty-seven passengers managed to flee from the flight although 13 were apprehended. Law enforcement in Barcelona were searching for the missing 14 people who avoided customs and passport control.
Five of the apprehended individuals were returned to the plane that was going on to Istanbul, Turkey. Eight people were being processed for non-admission from Spain.
A video was posted on Twitter showing passengers attempting to escape police and fleeing from the aircraft onto the runway at Barcelona Airport.
According to its website, Turkey’s low-cost Pegasus Airlines operates 82 international flights to several countries. The Morocco to Turkey flight had 228 people on board.
The woman who feigned labor was taken into custody and charged with public disorder.
This is the second time an incident like this occurred recently involving a flight from Morocco to Turkey. Last year, a similar situation took place and 12 people were detained after allegedly aiding illegal immigration when passengers abandoned the plane after an emergency landing on the island of Mallorca, Spain. The passenger who set off the incident pretended to be having a diabetic attack and caused the plane to make an emergency landing in Mallorca. Twelve people escaped but were caught. Most of the detainees were Moroccans.
