Prince Harry’s new memoir, entitled “Spare” hit the bookstores and the internet in January and was a big hit.
Especially interesting is the physical hit Prince Harry alleges that he received from his brother Prince William during an altercation, as their relationship took a turn for the worst after Harry’s marriage to American actress Meghan Markle.
Harry describes the 2019 fight in the couple’s London home when he met with his brother and Meghan wasn’t present. Harry alleges that William made insulting comments about Meghan, saying she was “rude,” “difficult,” and “abrasive,” which, according to Harry, was the kind of narrative he would expect from the British tabloid media about his wife, not from his family.
In an excerpt from the memoir, Prince Harry claims that the confrontation escalated, and at one point, William physically assaulted him.
The fight, which left evidence of visible cuts and bruises on his back, is just one of the many shocking incidents in the memoir “Spare,” which was released on January 10 and caused a much bigger rift in the family and put gas on the flames in the British public, who are already complaining about all the bad press about the royal institution. The Brits like their royals and don’t seem to like the “dirty laundry” coming out.
Speaking about the fight with his only sibling, Harry writes that his brother wanted to talk about their deteriorating relationship and the struggles they had with the media. Harry notes that when William arrived at Nottingham Cottage in London, where Harry and Meghan were living at the time, he was already agitated.
William complained about Meghan and Harry defended her, pointing out to his brother that he was repeating the tabloid lies about Meghan and that he expected better from him. He writes that William was not reasonable, and their discussion soon led to a confrontation, with the two shouting at each other.
At one point, William stepped toward Harry while swearing. Harry was scared by his brother’s aggression and retreated to the kitchen, but William, now furious, followed him.
Harry said that he tried to calm his brother down by handing him a glass of water, which William set down, then called Harry another name, and attacked him. Harry said the future king grabbed him by the collar, ripped off his necklace, and knocked him down.
Prince Harry landed on the floor on the dog’s food bowl, which cracked under his weight and cut him. Harry said he was speechless for a moment, and then he got up and ordered William to leave the house. William urged Harry to fight back, but he refused. William left, then returned to the house and apologized to Harry.
As William was leaving, he turned and told Harry that he did not need to tell his wife about the confrontation. Although Harry did not immediately tell Meghan, she noticed that he had cuts and bruises on his back, so he told her about it.
According to Harry, Meghan was not surprised or angry but sad.
On Sunday, Prince Harry spoke in an interview with ITV presenter Tom Bradby and accused his family of “getting into bed with the devil.”
In his interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, he said that his family accused Meghan of being a witch.
More juicy details are coming out day by day.
The events depicted in Harry’s memoir show us a side of Prince William that we do not see in public, which, if true, shows an unraveled royal, when we’re used to seeing him stoic, classy, and sophisticated. In telling his story, Harry seems to be telling us that the royal family is human, and not as cool and collected as they try to appear to be.
Harry says that he is not in contact with his brother and father and the present time. Can things get any worse?
