A five-year-old boy wandered off from his suburban Detroit, Michigan home in the middle of the night in the freezing cold. He was found dead by police officers in a snow-covered playground near his home in the morning.

Clinton Township Police Department said that the child’s family called 911 on Monday, January 23, after they discovered the boy wasn’t in his bed.

The boy’s mother said she last saw him when she put him to sleep at 10 pm. He was dressed in an undershirt and underwear.

Officers searched the surrounding area and discovered the child unresponsive in a snow-covered playground near his home early Monday morning.

He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead.

The police have not revealed how the boy was able to get out of his house or when he wandered off. The incident is not considered suspicious.

The temperatures on the night the child died were as low as 27 degrees Fahrenheit.
