Prince Harry’s long-awaited and highly anticipated memoir, “Spare,” is finally in bookstores after its release on Tuesday, January 10. In it, the prince makes some bombshell accusations against members of the royal family and reveals some juicy details about his life as a royal.
Days before the release, Prince Harry left many around the world stunned by the remarks he made about the British royal family and especially his stepmother Queen Consort Camilla during his interviews with ITV and 60 Minutes, which aired on Sunday, January 8.
The memoir features a lot of criticism from his time in the UK and details about why he split from the family in 2020.
Here are a few takeaways from the memoir.
Prince William allegedly attacked Harry.
One of the most controversial and explosive claims that Harry made in the book included the allegation that Prince William physically attacked him during an argument about his wife, Meghan. Harry revealed that William referred to his wife as a “rude,” “difficult,” and “abrasive” woman.
Harry said the confrontation got so heated that William grabbed him, ripped his necklace, and knocked him to the ground. The fight started when William came to his home, Nottingham cottage, to discuss their deteriorating relationship.
Harry tried to calm William down, but William called him names and then grabbed and knocked him to the ground. William apologized for the altercation later and asked him not to tell Meghan about it.
King Charles pleaded with Harry and William to mend their relationship.
Harry recalled returning to the UK after his and Meghan’s exit, for his grandfather’s funeral in 2021. Prince Philip’s funeral was the first time since they moved to the US and had the interview with Oprah that Harry had reunited with his father and William.
While there, Harry wanted to meet his father and brother to discuss a way out and reconcile, but he quickly learned during a secret meeting that they had come ready to fight.
Harry claimed that amid the rising tension in the room, King Charles pleaded with the brothers not to make his final years miserable.
William and Harry asked King Charles not to marry the Queen Consort.
In another part of the book, Harry revealed that he and Prince William pleaded with their father not to marry Camilla. Harry said that both he and William referred to Camilla as the “other woman,” and they wondered why their father had to marry her. However, they quickly learned that Camilla made King Charles happy, and they gave in to her becoming their stepmother.
Harry’s search for closure after Princess Diana’s death
Harry revealed that he recreated his mother’s last journey through the tunnel in Paris, where she died.
In 2007, when he was in Paris for a royal engagement, he asked his driver to drive through the tunnel at the speed his mother’s car was alleged to have been going.
According to Harry, there was no reason for an accident to happen there as the tunnel was short and simple with no frills. He said that that night, all the doubts he had about the police account of his mother’s death fell away.
He thought driving through the tunnel would bring him closure, but it worsened the pain.
Queen Elizabeth II’s death
Harry recounts how he found out about the Queen’s death. A few days before her death, his father called to tell him that his grandmother’s health had worsened. He sent William a text to inquire when the Prince of Wales and his wife were flying to Balmoral Castle but never got a reply.
Harry got another call from his father telling him to come to the castle, but Meghan was not invited. He remembered talking to the Queen four days before her death. As he started landing at the airport, he learned that his grandmother had passed away from the BBC website, and his father was now King.
