Eight individuals were shot at a Martin Luther King Day celebration attended by more than 1,000 people, according to the police in Fort Pierce, Florida.
The shooting happened at Ilous Ellis Park near Avenue M and 13th Street at 5:20 pm. during the Martin Luther King Car Show and Family Fun Day.
A 29-year-old woman, Nikkitia Bryant, died following the shooting that broke out between rival gang members. Bryant’s nine-year-old daughter was a witness to her shooting in what was supposed to be a fun day in the park after the parade.
Chief Deputy Brian Hester of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said that all eight of those wounded were adults and were admitted to the hospital for treatment, including Bryant, who died after surgery the following day.
As individuals fled for safety, at least eleven more people suffered injuries. A young person was harmed as others raced to leave the park where the event was taking place.
The gunfire started at about 5:20 pm as the neighborhood had congregated at the park to honor Martin Luther King Jr. with an afternoon car show, dancing performances, a live DJ, and kid-friendly activities.
A witness recorded the event, showing guests dancing by their cars and listening to the music until what appeared to be gunfire started to drown out the music. The audience began to move quickly away from the commotion, with some hiding behind cars or grabbing kids’ hands and rushing across the street.
Two sheriff’s deputies who were posted at the park rushed to the incident and helped the injured, and many witnesses also provided first aid and provided transportation to the hospital. An estimated 40 sheriff’s office employees were engaged in the investigation on Monday night as they examined the crime scene, spoke with victims at the hospital, and pursued leads.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the incident is the 30th large-scale shooting in the nation this year, as of January 17. The organization defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more persons are shot, excluding the gunman. The US has had an average of two shooting incidents per day so far this year.
