In Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Sunday, January 22, a second mass shooting of the day occurred. Twelve people were injured at a nightclub.
The attack occurred in the Dior Bar and Lounge, at around 1:30 am, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Police officers were standing outside the club when the shooting broke out, and they immediately entered the club to respond. Emergency services were provided to the injured and they were rushed to the hospital.
According to officers, nine of the people shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but three had injuries that the doctors considered life-threatening.
Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center reported that by 2:30 pm on Sunday, three patients were in critical condition, two of the injured were in stable condition, and the hospital had released one person.
Lt. Bryan Ballard, the Commander of the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Homicide Division, said the shooting appeared to be a targeted attack.
Detectives determined the type of gun used in the attack and said there was a single shooter that they are searching for.
Police Chief Paul said one of the people injured was the disk jockey.
The club’s owners are cooperating with the investigation.
At a press conference on Sunday, Chief Paul asked anyone who knows something about the incident to say something and save other people, as it was obvious the gunman had no regard for human life.
The Mayor of Baton Rouge, Sharon Weston Broome, said the attack was “a senseless act of violence.”
The shooting in Baton Rouge occurred just hours after another shooting at a California dance studio following Chinese New Year celebrations, which killed 10 people and injured 10 others.
