A Pennsylvania woman allegedly shot her elderly parents and dismembered their bodies. Police found the deceased couple inside their home on Tuesday, January 17.
Forty-three-year-old Verity Beck, who had been living with her parents, Reed Beck, 73, and Miriam Beck, 72, was charged with their murder after police responded to a call from her brother asking police to do a welfare check.
According to a criminal complaint, Verity’s brother had not spoken to their parents for a week. He drove to their home on Beverly Road and arrived on Tuesday night. He saw what looked like a body wrapped under a blanket.
He talked to Verity for about half an hour, and she told him that things had been bad. He told his sister to call the police, but she told him she needed more time before calling them.
The man got into his car and drove back home. He then called 911 and told officers to check on his parents.
Police from the Abington Police Department arrived at the residence at around 10:30 pm that night and quickly realized they would need a tactical response.
According to Police Chief Patrick Molloy, officers used drones, and a camera to search the area.
When officers finally breached the door, Verity surrendered and walked down the stairs with her hands up.
The Police Chief said that the 43-year-old woman confirmed that her parents were dead, asked about her cats and dogs, and did not speak again.
Speaking during a press conference, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele told reporters that police found the bodies of both parents at various stages of being dismembered. Verity had used a white bed sheet to wrap one of the victims.
Officers also discovered that she used an electric chainsaw to cut up their bodies and put some parts in trash bags in two trash cans.
An autopsy on the bodies revealed that both died from gunshot wounds to their heads, and authorities recovered several guns inside the home.
Investigators believe that the couple met their death on January 7. Verity’s brother also told the police that January 7 was the last time he spoke to his mother on the phone.
The brother also told investigators that he had been texting with his parents after that day, but authorities believe it was his sister texting him back, pretending to be their parents.
Although police have not yet released a motive for the murder, they announced that responding officers found a safe in a bedroom on the second floor with drill marks, suggesting that someone without access had tried to open it.
Miriam Beck was a retired school nurse who worked at the Lower Moreland High School for over two decades.
Authorities charged Verity with first degree murder and third-degree murder.
